Here is another portrait using church doors. Here you need to shoot the background and have an idea of where to dog will be positioned. I might take my daughters stuffed dog as a positioning prop.

Wow! Your blog is growing exponentially. Lots of great ideas. Pets are interesting because as far as I know no one really specialises in them in Canberra - that can be your niche market. When researching pets cast a wide net to include painting - as there are many art historical examples that maybe can provide inspiration for the photographic approach.
Good shoots and interesting research plans.
